4×4 Self-drive Cautions
Uganda, “the pearl of Africa” is a landlocked country so be sure to plan long-distance trips carefully. Generally, Uganda’s roads are in good condition according to the African road standards but the four main routes leading travellers out of Kampala to 4 regions of the country are made of smooth asphalt with many speed bumps and a few existing potholes on the major routes.
Each day trip to any destination or hotel requires a combination of driving on smooth and gravel roads, whereas off-road driving within the national parks is majorly done on dirt roads. The road conditions of both the gravel and dirt roads vary during different seasons of dry months and wet months, ie, they are dusty during the dry season, muddy during the rainy season and most difficult during the rainy season.
Other roads are greatly unsurfaced, thus reducing driving speed, which includes; from Masindi to Murchison falls national Park, fort portal via Hoima to Masindi, and the northern section from North of Gulu towards Kidepo National Park
Roadside crime is common so avoid picking up while driving in remote or major towns. Keep your doors locked at night and try to avoid travelling in remote areas at night. It is also known that thieves employ various schemes to stop cars including placing rocks on the road if you encounter this does not stop but drive around it and continue your journey.
Important Rules for driving in Uganda:
- Speed limits are 100 km/h on highways, 80 km/h on rural roads and 50 km/h in urban areas
- Driving without a valid driver allowance is illegal
- Driving is on the left side of the road.
- Remember to always wear your seat-belts
- Don’t use mobile phones when driving, a hands-free kit is permitted.
At quieter intersections, the first to arrive often has priority, at roundabouts give way to your right. - It is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The permitted blood alcohol level is 0.08%
