Bwindi Forest National Park-a gorilla trekking safari destination is located in Southwestern Uganda at the edge of the Albertine rift. The park is situated along the border of the Democratic Republic Of Congo, close to Virunga National Park. Bwindi. The park is part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and is home to half of the world’s surviving mountain gorillas. Bwindi’s Mist covered hillsides are nestled by one of Uganda’s ancient biological rain forests that date back to over 25000 years ago, thus containing about 400 plant species and also inhabit about 400 mountain gorillas including several habituated groups that can be tracked all year round in Uganda.
The biologically vast region is also home to about 120 other mammals including various primate species of baboons and chimpanzees not forgetting the elephants and antelopes. The forest also hosts approximately 348 bird species, among which 23 are endemic to the Albertine rift, 220 butterfly species, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, many endangered species, and 324 tree species.
Since the park is set 331 square kilometres of the improbable steep mountain forest, It is still recognized as undoubtedly Uganda’s biggest tourist draw card, due to the Famous Mountain gorillas although some of these species are also common in the Virunga massif which is shared by three countries, including Mgahinga Gorilla national park in Uganda; Volcanoes National park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of East Africa’s most famous national parks that is highly visited by both self-drive travellers and guided safaris mainly for Gorilla trekking in the wild. 14 habituated mountain gorilla groups are open to tourism in four different sectors of Buhoma, Ruhijja, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the Districts of Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro respectively all under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
The park has four trekking sectors of Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija and Nkuringo.
- Buhoma Sector; Nestled in the North corner of the park comprising of the Habiyanja, Mubare and Rushegura gorilla groups, that are always available for tracking. The sector has become famous because of the developed infrastructure, and Gorillas in this sector are easy to reach among other sectors of Rushaga, Ruhijahare the most accessible than in other regions.
- Rushaga Sector is located in the southeast of the park having five groups of gorillas, Nsongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Bweza, and Busingye. This region contains more habituated groups than others.
- Ruhija Sector -which is easily accessible from Kasese or Buhoma is located in the north of the park with groups, of Bitukura, Oruzogo and kyaguliro.
- Nkuringo Sector. This sector was named after the Nkuringo group, also known as the most exciting, entertaining and relaxed group. The area also provides stunning views of Lake Edward, Virunga and Nyiragongo Volcanoes by Goma, the DRC.
A deeper look into the inviting alluring brown eyes of the gentle mountain gorillas is an awe-inspirational memorable experience that can never be erased for a lifetime.
The Bwindi forest national park as it’s also known is one of Africa’s most ancient habitats since it thrived right through the last Ice Age (12,000 to 18,000 years ago) when most of Africa’s other forests disappeared. In conjunction with the altitude span (1160m to 2607m) this antiquity has produced an incredible diversity of flora and fauna, even by normal rainforest standards. And we do mean rainforest; up to 2.5m of rain falls here annually. It was named impenetrable because it’s thick.
Bwindi National Park consists of various attractions which include; 120 species of mammal more than any of Uganda’s other national parks, but due to the dense forest, some sightings may not be easily spotted. Lucky visitors might see forest elephants, 11 species of primate, duiker, bushbuck, African golden cats and the rare giant forest hog, as well as a host of bird and insect species. It is one of the bird-watching destinations in the country with 360 bird species, including 23 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift and several endangered species, such as the African green broad bill. With a good guide, sighting daily totals of over 150 species is possible. On the greener side of the aisle, Bwindi harbours eight endemic plants.
Self-drive travellers are advised to go gorilla trekking in Uganda as part of their safari holiday to east Africa, check for gorilla trekking permits that can be booked by Ultimate gorilla expeditions.
