One-Way Car Rental from Uganda to Tanzania

One-Way Car Rental from Uganda to Tanzania, Most self-drive travelers picture a round trip: pick up a 4×4 in Kampala, tour Uganda’s parks, and return the vehicle to the same rental yard. But a growing number of overlanders are discovering a smarter way to see East Africa — a one-way rental that starts in Uganda and ends in Tanzania. Instead of retracing more than a thousand kilometers of road just to hand back the keys, you drive a single continuous route south through the Great Lakes region, cross into Tanzania, and drop the vehicle off in Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, or Dar es Salaam, ready to fly home or continue your safari.

This guide walks through everything 4×4 adventures clients ask before booking a cross-border one-way rental: which route to take, what a Land Cruiser or RAV4 actually costs over ten to fourteen days, which documents the Mutukula and Kenyan border posts require, and how to structure an itinerary that turns the drive itself into part of the safari.

Who a One-Way Rental Makes Sense For

    • Travelers combining Uganda’s gorilla trekking with Tanzania’s northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) in a single trip.
    • Overlanders and self-drive enthusiasts who want to experience the drive through the Lake Victoria basin rather than fly between countries.
    • Groups flying into Entebbe and out of Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR).
    • Photographers and researchers on multi-week regional itineraries who need a vehicle for the full journey, not just one country.

    The Two Main Route Options

Where you plan to drop the vehicle off determines which corridor makes sense. Both routes are driveable in a well-maintained 4×4 and both cross into Tanzania at recognized, staffed border posts.

Route 1: Kampala → Mutukula → Arusha (Northern Safari Route)

This is the most popular one-way corridor, and the one Marriott Safaris Africa books most often. It runs south from Kampala through Masaka to the Mutukula border, then continues through Tanzania’s Kagera region toward Mwanza, Singida, and on to Arusha — gateway to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire.

One-Way Car Rental from Uganda to Tanzania

Leg Approx. Distance Typical Drive Time
    Kampala – Masaka 140 km 2 – 2.5 hours
Masaka – Mutukula border 90 km 1.5 hours
    Mutukula – Bukoba / Kagera region 180 km 3 – 4 hours (mixed tarmac/gravel)
    Kagera – Nzega/Singida corridor 500 km 8 – 9 hours
    Singida – Arusha 300 km 5 hours
    Total Kampala → Arusha ≈ 1,210 km 2 – 3 driving days recommended

Given the distance, most itineraries spread this drive across two to three days with an overnight in Bukoba or Mwanza, both of which sit on Lake Victoria and make a scenic, worthwhile stopover rather than a rushed transit.

Route 2: Kampala → Mutukula/Kenya → Dar es Salaam (Coastal Route)

Clients heading to the coast, Zanzibar, or southern Tanzania parks (Nyerere, Mikumi) typically drop off in Dar es Salaam instead. Two sub-routes exist:

    • Central Corridor via Mutukula: Kampala – Mutukula – Kagera – central Tanzania (Tabora/Dodoma) – Dar es Salaam. Longer but stays within a single border crossing.
    • Eastern Loop via Kenya and Arusha: Kampala – Malaba/Busia (Kenya) – Nairobi – Namanga – Arusha – Dar es Salaam. Popular when the itinerary already includes Nairobi or the Maasai Mara.
Route Approx. Distance Border Crossings Typical Drive Time
    Central Corridor (via Mutukula) ≈ 1,850 km 1 (Uganda–Tanzania) 4 – 5 driving days
    Eastern Loop (via Kenya, Arusha) ≈ 1,700 km 2 (Uganda–Kenya, Kenya–Tanzania) 4 – 5 driving days

Neither coastal route is a rushed weekend drive. Clients doing a Dar es Salaam drop-off almost always build in stops at Lake Victoria, the Serengeti or a central Tanzania town, turning the transfer into a proper overland safari rather than a point-to-point delivery.

    Vehicle Options for a Cross-Border One-Way Rental

Not every rental vehicle is approved for cross-border use, and not every vehicle suits 1,200–1,900 km of mixed tarmac and gravel roads. 4×4 Adventures cross-border fleet is built around four vehicle classes:

Vehicle Best For Seats Indicative Daily Rate (USD)
    Toyota RAV4 Couples, light packing, tarmac-heavy routes 4 70 – 90
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Families, mixed road conditions, comfort 5 – 7 120 – 160
    Toyota Land Cruiser 76/79 (rooftop tent) Overlanders, self-catering camping en route 2 – 4 + roof tent 150 – 220
    Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4×4 Groups needing cargo space and durability 4 – 5 110 – 150

For the Kampala–Arusha corridor, a RAV4 or Prado is sufficient — the road is mostly tarmac with short unpaved stretches near the border. For the longer coastal routes or any itinerary that includes central Tanzania’s rougher secondary roads, a Land Cruiser or Hilux with higher ground clearance is the safer choice.

What a One-Way Rental Actually Costs

The headline daily rate is only part of the budget. A cross-border, one-way booking carries three additional line items that a same-country round trip does not: a one-way relocation fee, cross-border permit costs, and COMESA insurance.

Cost Item Typical Range (USD) Notes
Daily vehicle rate 70 – 220 / day Depends on vehicle class; 10–14 day trips attract lower per-day rates
One-way relocation fee 400 – 1,500 Higher for Dar es Salaam drop-off than Arusha; waived on some 14+ day bookings
COMESA Yellow Card insurance 60 – 120 One-time fee for the trip duration; covers third-party liability across the region
Temporary Import Permit (Tanzania) 20 – 25 Issued at the border for the vehicle’s stay in Tanzania
Cross-border rental authorization letter Included / 20 – 50 Notarized letter from the rental company; mandatory at the border
Fuel Variable Budget roughly USD 0.10–0.13/km for a 4×4; fuel is cheaper in Uganda than Tanzania

Sample 10-Day Budget: Land Cruiser Prado, Kampala → Arusha

    •  Vehicle rental (10 days @ USD 140): USD 1,400

    •  One-way relocation fee (Arusha drop-off): USD 600

    •  COMESA insurance: USD 90

    •  Tanzania Temporary Import Permit: USD 25

    •  Fuel (≈1,300 km @ USD 0.12/km): USD 156

    •  Estimated total: USD 2,271 (excludes park fees, accommodation, and permits for gorilla trekking or safari activities)

Documents You Need at the Border

Cross-border self-drive is straightforward once the paperwork is in order, but missing a single document is the most common reason travelers are turned back at Mutukula. Confirm each of the following before you leave Kampala:

    1. Valid passport with at least six months’ validity and two blank pages.
    2. East Africa Tourist Visa or Tanzania visa/e-Visa, as applicable to your nationality.
    3. Yellow fever vaccination certificate — mandatory for anyone traveling from Uganda, a yellow-fever-endemic country.
    4. Vehicle logbook or registration copy, provided by the rental company.
    5. COMESA Yellow Card, arranged in advance through the rental company.
    6. Temporary Import Permit, issued at the Mutukula OSBP on entry into Tanzania.
    7. Notarized cross-border rental authorization letter naming the driver and confirming permission to take the vehicle out of Uganda.
    8. Valid driving licence or International Driving Permit (IDP).
    Border Tip

    •  Mutukula operates as a One-Stop Border Post (OSBP), open 24 hours — Ugandan exit and Tanzanian entry formalities are completed at a single building, cutting typical crossing time to well under an hour outside peak cargo-truck periods.

    •  Keep all original documents in a folder in the front of the vehicle; officials will ask for the logbook and authorization letter before the COMESA card.

Crossing the Border Step by Step (Mutukula)

    1. Stop at the Uganda side of the OSBP and present passports for exit stamping.
    2. Present the vehicle logbook and rental authorization letter to Ugandan customs for an exit declaration.
    3. Walk to the adjoining Tanzanian counter (same building) for entry visa processing and passport stamping.
    4. Present the COMESA Yellow Card and apply for the Temporary Import Permit for the vehicle.
    5. Customs may do a brief visual inspection of the vehicle and luggage.
    6. Collect stamped documents, confirm the TIP validity period matches your planned stay, and proceed into Tanzania.

    Drop-Off Locations in Tanzania

Drop-Off City Best For Relocation Fee Tier
Arusha Northern safari circuit, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) Lower
Moshi Kilimanjaro climbs, JRO departures Lower
Mwanza Western Serengeti access, Lake Victoria region Moderate
Dar es Salaam Zanzibar ferry connections, international flights out of DAR Higher

Sample 10-Day Itinerary: Kampala to Arusha

    Day Route / Activity
1 Pick up vehicle in Kampala; drive to Lake Mburo National Park
2 – 3 Queen Elizabeth National Park — game drives and Kazinga Channel cruise
    4 – 5 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — gorilla trekking
6 Drive south to Masaka, cross the border at Mutukula, overnight in Bukoba
7 Bukoba to Mwanza, overnight on Lake Victoria
8 Mwanza to Serengeti National Park (western corridor entry)
9 Serengeti game drives; continue to Ngorongoro Crater rim
10 Ngorongoro to Arusha; drop off vehicle, transfer to JRO or onward safari

    Road Conditions and Driving Notes

    • Kampala to Masaka to Mutukula is fully tarmacked and in good condition.
    • The stretch from Mutukula through Kagera toward Nzega has sections of gravel and seasonal potholing — allow extra time in the rainy seasons (March–May and October–November).
    • The Singida–Arusha and Arusha–Dar es Salaam tarmac roads are well maintained but carry heavy truck traffic; plan driving hours to avoid arriving at unfamiliar towns after dark.
    • Fuel stations are reliable in major towns but can be sparse on the Kagera–Nzega stretch — top up whenever the tank drops below half.
    • A 4×4 with good ground clearance is strongly recommended for any itinerary that detours into Serengeti or Tarangire before reaching the drop-off city.

Safety and Packing Tips for the Cross-Border Drive

    • Carry printed and digital copies of every document listed above, plus spares of your passport photo page.
    • Keep a physical map or offline GPS app — mobile data coverage drops in stretches of the Kagera region.
    • Travel with a basic spares kit: spare tyre, tyre-repair kit, jump-start cable, and a tow rope.
    • Carry both Ugandan shillings and Tanzanian shillings in small denominations for border fees and roadside purchases; US dollars are accepted at official points but change is often given in local currency.
    • Avoid arriving at Mutukula late at night; while the post operates 24 hours, daylight crossings are faster and safer for first-time cross-border drivers.
    • Confirm with your rental company in advance which class of vehicle is approved for cross-border travel — not all rental fleets permit their standard sedans to leave Uganda.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a car in Uganda and drop it off in Tanzania?

Yes. Several Uganda-based rental companies, including Marriott Safaris Africa, offer one-way cross-border rentals with drop-off in Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, or Dar es Salaam, provided the correct COMESA insurance and border documentation are arranged in advance.

How much extra does a one-way rental cost compared to a round trip?

Expect a one-way relocation fee of roughly USD 400 to 1,500 on top of the standard daily rate, depending on the vehicle class and how far the drop-off city is from the pickup point in Kampala.

Do I need a different insurance policy to cross into Tanzania?

Yes — a COMESA Yellow Card is required for any vehicle crossing between member states, including Uganda and Tanzania. Uganda’s standard local motor insurance does not cover cross-border liability on its own.

How long does the Mutukula border crossing take?

Under normal conditions, expect 30 minutes to just over an hour at the Mutukula One-Stop Border Post. Crossing can take longer when cargo trucks are backed up, so early-morning or midday crossings are generally quicker than late afternoon.

Is it better to cross via Mutukula or via Kenya?

For an Arusha or Moshi drop-off, the Mutukula route is more direct and involves only one border crossing. The Kenyan route via Namanga makes sense mainly if your itinerary already includes Nairobi or the Maasai Mara.

Can I self-drive with a rooftop tent vehicle across the border?

Yes, rooftop tent Land Cruisers are approved for cross-border travel and are a popular choice for overlanders camping en route through Lake Victoria towns or inside Serengeti and Tarangire on the way to the drop-off city.
